First Week

Taking the elevator up to our afternoon lab.


It's been a very busy first week at COSMOS.

Students got a "crash" course in Python.  They learned a lot of basics in a short period of time.  Like all things in life, some caught on fairly quickly, others took a bit more to get their footing.  Didn't matter where they fell on the spectrum, our mentors did their best to support and challenge them in their learning.

After getting some Python programming basics down, it was on to Machine Learning!  They learned about some supervised and unsupervised learning which included decision trees, k-Nearest Neighbors and k-Means Clustering by the end of Thursday!  It was A LOT, but we get into the core of the cluster pretty quickly so we can do some fun and interesting work.

Friday, they'll get their first project in which they'll be able to apply their choice or variety of algorithms learned.  We're excited to see what they come up with.

First Machine Learning Project: Clustering

On Wednesday, students presented their work on Spotify data using either k- Nearest Neighbors, k- Means Clustering or logistic regression.  They needed to also include a visualization of their data.  This was their first "formal" presentation of the cluster. They implemented algorithms to have the machine make suggestions or predictions about data.  Some created their own versions of recommender systems (based on songs, playlists, determining if a song is of a specific genre, etc.). Final Presentations

Thank you for being a part of Cluster 12.  It was an honor and privilege to be your Teacher Fellow and a part of your journey.  Thank you for allowing me to be your "paparazzi" in an attempt to capture your time in class and in lab.  It has been an absolute pleasure having this group of amazing individuals in Cluster 12.  They were challenged in many ways and rose to each challenge.  I am so proud of all they accomplished.  Final Project Special Recognition was awarded to Robert and Ronit. Project #2 - Image Processing and Neural Networks

On Monday, July 24, students presented their neural network classification projects.  Students were tasked with training their model to identify images and create an application around it.  At the conclusion, the students voted for their "People's Choice Award" for their favorite application created.  The teaching team (faculty, cluster assistants and teacher fellow) selected the "Faculty Choice Award".
